To pass a vacation to Bed and Breakfast Villa Venezia, means to have the possibility to visit numerous art's towns, to follow extraordinary routes and to practice sport activity to 15 minuteren from Venice and its islands. All the places that we will go to describe to be distant less than an hour than machine from Villa Venezia B&B.
The Riviera del Brenta (Brenta River) is made up of districts and green spots along the ancient course of a river linking Padua to Venice. This was the ideal extension of Venice onto the mainland, almost a continuation of the lagoon city: between the 16th and the 18th century the Brenta Riviera experienced a golden age which turned it into a privileged holiday resort for rich Venetian nobles. They built dozen of villas along its riverbanks, designed and decorated by masters of Italian art, visited by artists, popes, kings and men of culture, envied for their beauty, inhabited as country seats where they celebrated ritual floating processions, sumptuous dinners and festivities lasting until dawn.
Along the River one can admire more than fifty villas, once summer residences of the Venetian nobility. Quite interesting are the villages and the ancient bridges along the river.
Villa Foscari, designed by Palladio. The image of the villa's pronaos reflected on the water is still fresh in our minds as we catch sight of the next villages and their villas. The best known are: the seventeenth century "foresterie" (guest houses) of Villa Valmarana overlooking Villa Widmann Foscari located on the opposite river bank in Mira Porte; Villa Angeli in Dolo designed by Scamozzi; Villa Soranzo in Fiesso with the whole frescoed façade;
Villa Pisani in Stra. Rich as a jewel casket, the villa is of outstanding interest to visitors, with frescoes by Tiepolo and Guarana, spectacular stables and the celebrated maze, epitomizing eighteenth century Venetian society which, in the game of the history, performed vanishing acts, only to appear once again.
The Brenta has had many famous guests such as Henry IV King of France, D'Annunzio, Byron, Galileo Galilei, etc.. many others praised its beauties as Goethe and Goldoni. Also Dante Alighieri mentiones Oriago in the Divine Comedy.
Venice is world-famous for its canals, museums and churchs. It is built on an archipelago of 118 islands formed by about 150 canals in a shallow lagoon. The islands on which the city is built are connected by about 400 bridges. In the old center, the canals serve the function of roads, and every form of transport is on water or on foot. The classical Venetian boat is the gondola, although it is now mostly used for tourists, or for weddings, funerals, or other ceremonies. Most Venetians now travel by motorised waterbuses (vaporetti) which ply regular routes along the major canals and between the city's islands.
The sestieri are the primary traditional divisions of Venice. The city is divided into the six districts (sestieri) of Cannaregio, San Polo, Dorsoduro (including the Giudecca), Santa Croce, San Marco (including San Giorgio Maggiore), and Castello (including San Pietro di Castello and Sant'Elena).
Murano is usually described as an island in the Venetian Lagoon, although like Venice itself it is actually an archipelago of islands linked by bridges. It lies about a mile north of Venice and is famous for its glass making, particularly lampworking.
Burano is situated 7 kilometers from Venice, a short 40 minute trip by Venetian boats, and is known for its lacework.
Burano is also known for its small, brightly-painted houses, popular with artists. The designer Philippe Starck owns three houses. Other attractions include the Church of San Martino with a campanile, the Oratorio Santa Barbara and the Museum and School of Lacemaking. The colours of the houses follow a specific system originating from the golden age of its development; This practice has resulted in the myriad of warm, pastelly colours that characterises the island today.
Torcello is a quiet and sparsely populated island at the northern end of the Venetian Lagoon. It is considered the oldest continuously populated region of Venice.
Main attraction is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, founded in 639 and with much eleventh and twelfth century Byzantine work, including mosaics , surviving. Other attractions include the eleventh and twelfth century Church of Santa Fosca, which is surrounded by a porticus in form of a Greek cross, and a museum housed in two fourteenth century palaces, the Palazzo dell’Archivio and the Palazzo del Consiglio, which was once the seat of the communal government.
The island is home to three settlements. The Lido itself, in the north, is home to the Film Festival, the Grand Hotel des Bains, the Venice Casino and the Grand Hotel Excelsior. Malamocco, in the centre, is the first and for a long time the only settlement. It was at one time home to the Doge of Venice. Alberoni at the southern end is home to the Fort San Nicolo and a golf course.
At least half the Adriatic side of the island is constituted by a sandy beach, much of which belongs to the various hotels that house the summer tourists.
About 50 kilometres from B&B Villa Venezia , we find the town Bassano del Grappa, the second most important in the province, after the aforementioned capital. Many are the visitors who come to admire the Brenta river by the Alpini Bridge, also known as the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) and to learn about the art of printing developed to a level of excellence by the Remondini family during the XVIIIth century. But also to see majolica, earthenware, and historical porcelain in the Ceramic Museum: unique and peculiar examples of local craftsmanship starting with the beginning of the XVII century.
Other visitors will be interested in reliving Bassano's fascinating history, walking around the town's relaxing streets, beginning with the middle ages, when it was a small feudal settlement belonging to the Ezzelino family, through to the more recent events: the Great War, fascism and World War Two. Many will be tempted by the unique chance to taste the famous grappa at the Nardini distillery itself on the Old Bridge, founded in 1779 or at Poli, a distillery as far back as 1898, a stone's throw from Nardini.
Bassano: the ideal destination for a relaxing half day tour.
Those who wish can also visit, before or after Bassano, the little walled town of Marostica, famous for its cherries and for the renowned chess game played with human pieces on the town square, inspired by a colourful medieval legend, a characteristic event not to be missed. For a full day's tour you can visit Vicenza and its Palladian buildings , Bassano and possibly Marostica.
TREVISO, in origin a Roman city, then a commune and finally a Venetian possession, mainly medieval in aspect, with picturesque canals and noble buildings.
it is the home of the headquarters of designer clothing company Benetton, and of the major appliance maker DeLonghi.
As soon as we arrive in Treviso, we go straight to San Nicolo a superb Romanesque and Gothic church of refined proportions, the largest in the city, with frescoes by Tomaso da Modena and numerous pictures and sculptures.
From here, by way of Via Battisti and Via S. Liberate, passing the Palladian church of S. Agnese, we reach the Art Gallery, interesting for frescoes by Tomaso da Modena, paintings by Giovanni Bellini, Cima da Conegliano, etc., and works of the 17° and 18° centuries.
Turning down Via Canova (notice the Casa da Noal with its painted facade), we come to the Cathedral, distinguished by its seven domes.Inside, a tender Annunciation by Titian and the ethereal Madonna dei Fiore by Girolamo da Treviso.
Next to the Cathedral are the 13° century Bishop's Palace and the Baptistery. From here, we walk to the Canale dei Buranelli to see the old houses which line it and finally reach the Piazza dei Signori, the center of the city of Treviso, dominated by the Palazzo dei Trecento (1217) and the Palazzo dei Podesta. The visit ends at the graceful Loggia dei Cavalieri.
With its immense artistic and cultural patrimony, Verona can be considered, the second city after Rome in Italy; it is famous for its Roman amphitheatre, the Arena, completed around 30 AD, which is the third largest in Italy, after Rome's Colosseum and the arena at Capua. There is also a variety of other Roman monuments to be found in the town, such as the Roman theatre. Not far from it is the Ponte di Pietra ("Stone Wall Bridge"), another roman landmark that has survived to this day.The Arco dei Gavi (Gavi Arch), dedicated to the important Roman family of the Gavii. The Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore is considered one of the great achievements of Romanesque architecture. The splendid facade dominates the large square, and is flanked with a beautiful 72 meter tall bell tower, which is mentioned by Dante in Canto 18 of Purgatory in the Divine Comedy. The weathered Veronese stone gives a warm golden glow and the restrained lines of the pillars, columns, cornices and the gallery with its double windows give the facade an air of harmonious elegance. With an impressive span length of 48.70 m, the 1356 completed segmental arch bridge Ponte Scaligero featured at the time the world's largest bridge arch.
