Every year punctually returns, on the first Sunday of September, the Historical Regatta, the most traditional amongst the Venetians events, which was held for the fist time on January 10 1315, during reign of the Doge Giovanni Soranzo. The magnificent event, which at the time of Serenissima was organised to celebrate military victories or pay homage to foreign dignitaries, today is made up by two different moments: the historical parade and the Regatta. It is a pageant of tipical sixteenth century crafts, with at the head the tipical Bucintoro, the Serenissima boat of the Republic representatives. It is followed by the true competition, attended by spectators taking part passionately with encouraging and prodding hollering toward their own darlings. To the Historical Regatta partecipate verious types of boats: small gondola, caorlina ( small fishing boats), mascareta, pupparini and, obviously, the gondola, the venetian boats by antonomasia. Various are the competions takin place within the Historical Regatta: regatta of champions on small gondolas, ladies regatta on mascarete( a variant of sandolo, a flat bottom boeat), youth regatta on pupparini ( asymmetric shaped leisure boat stern).
